Hand Made Thai Silk
Hand made Thai silk has been world renowned for centuries as the Queen of Fibres because of its beautiful lustre, sensual texture and stunning array of colours.
Our silk is made in the traditional Thai way by hand, using wooden reels, spindles and looms. All thread is hand dyed in boiling water over open fires, and sun-dried, before the fabric is woven.

The four different silk yarn types are:
- Buoy Yarn- the finest and shiniest yarn that produces highly iridescent fabric, a hallmark of Thai silk. It is most suited to soft furnishings and fashion.
- Chan Yarn- a less expensive alternative to Buoy - has a slightly rougher texture than Buoy, and is also suitable for soft furnishings and fashion.
- Dupiem (Dupion) Yarn- a versatile flat textured yarn, also suitable for furnishings and fashion.
- Sri Pimai Yarn- the coarsest yarn, most suitable for upholstery, with or without backing, and wall coverings. This is a thick, rough and very natural yarn. It is only produced once a year during the rainy season in Thailand .
In addition Residence also offers the following special fabrics:
- N&N- combines two or three different plys to produce tactile and eye-catching patterns for upholstery, curtains and wall coverings.
- Pleated Silk- ideal for that special furnishing touch this pleating is hand produced and permanent.
- Sai Fon - an innovative new weave is made with two different colours of buoy yarn in the weft shuttle. The resultant silk is not only visually stunning but beautifully tactile as well. Sai Fon is not only suitable for women's high fashion wear, but its use in decorating applications such as curtains and wall covering results in a distinctive and eye-catching effect.
Washable Silk- made from Buoy yarn, and available in one and two ply. It is most suitable for curtains and cushion covers in high use situations, and for ladies and gentlemen's blouses and shirts. The process ensures that the silk, which can usually only be dry cleaned, can instead be machine washed in water up to 60 degrees Celsius. |
